Choose the right fluids in sufficient quantity

Here are some tips:

  • The body needs at least 1.5L (6 cups) of water a day to stay hydrated. If you are not hydrated enough, a feeling of dry mouth may appear.

  • Water is the best drink, so always have a bottle of water to take small sips often throughout the day. Prefer water at room temperature, neither too hot nor too cold.

  • Make sure you have a beverage (water, milk, herbal tea, etc.) with meals. Take small sips between bites.

  • Suck on ice cubes or popsicles to keep your mouth moist.

  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol (including mouthwash with alcohol) because they may dry out the mouth.

  • Limit caffeine (cola-type soft drinks, energy drinks, coffee, tea): caffeine is a dehydrating agent.
